Tucked away near the corner of E166th St. and Lexington in Spanish Harlem you will find one of the best Mexican Restaurants in New York. Besides the delicious Mexican cuisine, you will also find a fusion of Latin-American food. What is this place called? It’s the El Kallejon restaurant and cocktail bar.
Favorites and more
In El Kallejon you are getting a little bit of what you might expect from a local cantina in Mexico. It almost feels like you are stepping back in time. The interior gives a nice dimly lit atmosphere and there are a lot of wooden features. But when you see the menu, you know you are back in the future.
Of course, this is New York City and the menu reflects influences of all the different cultures within the city. You will find familiar things like a quesadilla, tacos, and ceviche. But you will also find Naked Mini Albondigas with quail eggs and guacamole with hickory crab, shrimp, and fresh pomegranates.
El Kallejon also has an extensive cocktail menu. They have a great selection of fine tequilas, blanco, anejos, reposado and even one reservas extra anejos (Don Juliio 1942). If you prefer a non-alcoholic drink check out their very own brewed sodas. You can choose flavors such as Jamaica Flower and Tropical Passion Habanero.
You might get lucky just stopping in but it’s recommended to make a reservation to make sure you get a table. If you go on a weekend you will be entertained with live music. And If you are nice and ask politely they might even let you sit out in their courtyard in the back.
